Internet Psychotherapy Services

Web therapy (or "telemental health") is the provision of mental health services using live, interactive videoconferencing.  Internet therapy is designed to meet the needs of clients who would like to pursue counseling or psychotherapy but, for a variety of reasons, have a preference or need to receive services at home.  For example,  it may be much more convenient to engage with a therapist over the internet for a person who works from home.  Another reason for seeking therapy over the internet might be the lack of an appropriate mental health professional in the local community or a preference for working with a psychologist outside of their area (if they live in a small town).   Web therapy is not appropriate for everyone.  It is not the best option someone who is in serious crisis and could need access to emergency services or for someone who does not have the necessary privacy to participate in a home-based treatment session.  However, it may be the perfect choice for someone living in Austin, Houston or Dallas who does not have the flexibility to attend regular in-office sessions due to work or family constraints.  If you live in Texas or outside of Albuquerque in New Mexico and want to explore therapy over the internet, please contact me to discuss details.

I offer a free 15-minute consultation (which includes determining whether the potential client has the necessary technology for connecting over the internet) for internet therapy clients.  This will allow both of us to know whether there is adequate technology and privacy to embark upon internet psychotherapy.

The initial diagnostic session is used both to collect pertinent social history information and to make a determination as to whether internet therapy is an appropriate modality of therapy for a particular person.  I am a licensed psychologist in both New Mexico and Texas and I use an internet platform that meets all the criteria of The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).  I am not licensed (at this time) to provide services to clients in other areas of the country.  This platform can also link up more than one computer for a session allowing (for example) a couple who wants assistance in parenting to both attend the session using separate screens.

If you think that you might be interested in web-based psychotherapy, please contact me and we can discuss it further.  As long as you have an up-to-date computer, tablet or smartphone, have a good internet connection, and have the privacy to speak confidentially, internet therapy might be the right choice for you.
